A Day in the Suuk and Ben Yehuda Street 12-10-09

We're winding down here at the JC....it's really weird. We are in the midst of finals week, yet we are saying goodbye to the city that has become our home. It's sometimes difficult to find a balance, but we're doing a fairly good job.

This morning we had our first final, it was in Brother Hamblin's class, Ancient Near East. I think this class, and our religion classes, was my favorite. It has always been really interesting. He takes time out of class to introduce us to sites that we're visiting, as well as the history of the area. We all like his tests, especially. Some of the tests here at the center are slightly impossible, and sometimes it's hard to feel like we were tested on things that show how much we've learned. But, then again, what else can they do to create a grade curve when they're teaching a bunch of overachievers. I will tell you: they make it impossible. But hey, we've come out, for the most part, unscathed from this semester. I think some of us will be kissing our former GPAs goodbye, but a lot of us probably will come out the same as we usually do. So there you go. Anyway, back to ANE. We really like Hamblin's tests because we feel like we were able to demonstrate our knowledge through his questions. Yes, some people still probably didn't do amazing, but it was a reflection of knowledge, so we were all happy with it, even if it was a "hard" test for some, and an "easy" test for others. So that was good. A good morning.

After that I studied for a while. We have New Testament tomorrow morning and our Field Trip Exam in the afternoon. I had some lunch, and then I went out with a group to the Suuk and Ben Yehuda street.

The Suuk, as I have mentioned before, is an open-air market where they sell everything! I bought some treats for my Family (I am the mother of our Family Home Evening Group), and I bought some dried cranberries for a snack to munch on during finals (to keep me out of the shekel shack [even though I haven't really bought a ton...it's likely to happen during finals]). I also got some earrings, and then some really cool "poor man's gloves" that go up my arm. I am really quite tickled with my purchases. It's fairly inexpensive at the Suuk. I think I spent about $20 on new gloves, three pairs of earrings, treats/gummies, and dried cranberries. Oh and a new wallet! Sweet. I figure that it's best to spend twenty bucks here than 40 bucks in Utah for all of that stuff.

After the Suuk we went to Ben Yehuda street and I thought about some skirts, but didn't buy any of them. What I did buy was a good purchase though...it was an Oreo McFlurry at the McDonalds over there. Katy, I'm sure you can relate to the "I Miss American Food" blues, although I have nothing to complain about compared to Paella with shrimp complete with eyeballs and little....tentacle things. Yum :). I'll take Falafel and Schwarma (amaazzing) anyday.

I took some pictures of this, but just of the Suuk, and I've already posted pictures. I just thought that you'd like to hear some of my CURRENT activities. (I am all caught up on my blog and trying to keep going strong! I hope you all are enjoying it!)

Everyone, have a wonderful day. I love you all, very much!
